Diceymemory Board Games - Notes and Instructional Videos
Under Construction!
This page is used to collect hints and instructional videos that we have passed
to people new to playing "Euro" style board games. They were collected
as part of our teaching games at our local game club.
Our collection of board games may be found on Board Game Geek under our profile WeAreOld.
You can use Board Game Geek as a good source to learn about thousands of games.
See what other people thought of the game via video and text reviews before you play or buy a game.
We Are Old User Collection
We often implement house rules to make playing the game more fun for 2 players
and to make the game shorter time-wise.
Game: Lords of Waterdeep with expansions
A good introduction to an almost pure worker placement game.
Based in the D&D city of Waterdeep, you play the role of an unidentified overlord,
trying to recruit adventurers to complete missions for you.
Lords of Waterdeep
Notes
Our favorite house rule is to drop mandatory quests.
Game: Suburbia
A good introdution to tile laying games.
You purchase and place tiles representing different aspects of a suburb -
residential, commercial, industrial, and community services (e.g. parks)
Try to develop the "best" suburb, based on share common goals and personal secret goals.
Surburbia
Game: Castles of Mad King Ludwig
A tile laying game
Try to assemble a castle from pre-defined rooms that "best" meets the Kings desires.
The twist ? - When you are the first player, you get to set the prices of the rooms
For extra grins and giggles, after the game ends, make up a story that tells
why the castle is constructed the way it is (e.g. why does everyone enter via the baby nursery?)

Game: Mayfairs Empire Builder Railroad Series (e.g. EuroRails)
A "pickup and deliver" game.
Pay to define a railroad with a crayon to connect the source cities of vaious products
to cities that want the products. Get paid based on the shortest possible delivery distance.
Learn a little about city locations and products.
Game maps for Europe (EuroRails), China, Russia, North America (Empire Builder),
Japan (Nippon Rails), India, Australia, the Moon (Luna Rails), Mars, and a Fantasy setting (Iron Dragon)
Empire Buider
Our favorite house rules are the fast trains option and each player runs 2 trains.
We also limit the number of disasters pulled in a row to 2 and start with 60 million.
Using these rules, a 2 player version of EuroRails can be played in an hour or less.
Game: Terraforming Mars
A combination of tile laying and some deck building
Transform Mars into a viable planet for humans.
Terraforming Mars
Our favorite house rule is that "bad things" happen to "Jim" (an imaginary player).
This keeps peace between spouses and friends. Nobody gets ganged up on.
Game: Acquire
Build the biggest hotel chain

Game: Power Grid
A resource management game in which you compete to have the biggest electrical power system.
Buy power plants, resources to power your plants, rights to distribute electricity
in cities, and transmission lines. As the game progresses, power plants become bigger and
more efficient, but you lose the monopoly to service a city.
Resource prices and availability depends on demand of all players.
Watch out for a "pounce" move by another player to force the end of the game!

You must balance your resources for finding a cure with treating sick people
Balance your team with medical personnel and logistics personnel, if you opt to select roles, rather than choose randomly.

Game: Telestrations
A Great party game for 6 players and up - Pictionary meets Telephone Line
Have another drink. Then simultaneously each player draws a sketch of their secret word in a sketch book.
The sketches are passed to the right, and the next players write down their guesses on a new page.
The new guesses are passed to the right, and the next player draws a sketch based on the new guesses on another new page.
The new sketches are then passed to the right, and the sequence continues until the sketch books reach the original players.
The worst your drawing (and the more you consume), the more the guesses diverge from the original secret word.
e.g. final guess: "Three dead bodies in a pond" The secret word: "Mac and cheese". Yep. It's fun
