This page shows various instructional videos of mosly beginner social dances
Using these dance elements allows the most flexibility in dancing, however they require more work from the Leader and Follower.
The Leader must decide on the next steps (dance elements) to use, based on floor space available and what other dancers might be moving into the needed dance space. Further, the Leader must do this sufficienty in advance, while still dancing the current elements, to be able to give the Follower a strong lead.
The Follower must pay attention to the lead, while dancing the current element, to react appropriately.
The Leader and Follower must maintain good dance frame to allow the leads to be transmitted from the Leader to the Follower.

Another page shows Partner Circle dances. These Partner dances use pre-determined patterns of elements so the Leader and Follower do not have to do as much thinking; however, there must be available dance floor space to do the pattern. The Partner dance patterns range in lengths from about 28 to 64 counts.

When using social dance elements, a couple can improve their learning speed and reduce the brain power needed when on the dance floor by learning short segments of several dance elements that they always do in fixed sequence. We strongly recommend learning short segments of elements as a balance between mental effort and flexibility while on the dance floor. Some of the following videos offer short patterns as samples.
